Description of box girder crane
Box girder crane is widely used in the industry to upload goods or materials. Box girder cranes have an excellent weight-to-span length ratio compared to typical cranes. This feature greatly reduces the cost of steel construction projects.
Box girder gantry crane fabrication

The box girder serves as the primary load-bearing structure of a gantry crane, composed of upper / lower cover plates, web plates, and internal stiffening plates. These components are typically fabricated from high-strength steel grades such as ASTM A36, S355JR, or Q355B, selected for their durability and weldability. The steel plates undergo special surface pre-treatment (dark red appearance), to prevent corrosion and extend the crane's service life.
For large-span cranes, the box girder incorporates many stiffening plates to:
- Reinforce structural integrity by distributing loads between the cover plates and webs.
- Transfer trolley forces evenly to the web plates during operation, minimizing localized stress.
After welding and assembly, the box girder undergoes SA2.5 shot blasting to remove impurities and create an optimal surface for protective paint adhesion, ensuring long-term resistance.
Advantages of gantry crane box girder
Excellent load capacity:
The box beam design can provide a greater load-bearing capacity than I-beam girders.
High strength and stability:
Box girder cranes are welded by steel plate. This type of crane girder has a high strength-to-weight ratio, which makes them more strength, stability, and unyielding.
Long spans:
Gantry crane box girders outperform traditional designs with superior spanning capacity (30m+), offering greater rigidity and load-bearing efficiency through their enclosed structure, ideal for large-scale material handling in shipyards, workshops, and industrial facilities.
Reduced deflection:
Box girders exhibit lower deflection under load, which is essential for precision lifting and long-span applications.
Torsional rigidity:
The closed shape of the box girder provides excellent resistance to torsional (twisting) forces, improving stability during lateral crane travel or uneven loading.
Durability and long lifespan:
With ASTM A36, S355, Q235B steel as the raw material, box girder crane are highly durable and built for long service life, ideal for heavy-duty operations.
Disadvantages of overhead crane box girder
Higher initial cost:
The complex welding and steel plate assembly involved in making a box girder makes it more expensive than standard I-beam girders.
Heavier weight:
The solid construction increases the weight of the crane itself, which may require stronger supporting structures.
Complex manufacturing:
The fabrication of box girder crane is more complex than traditional gantry crane, requiring precise fabrication (e.g. full-penetration welding, ultrasonic testing).
Application of box girder overhead crane

Box girder crane has key characteristics of long spans and higher capacity. Because less steel is used in the fabrication of box girder cranes, and also maintains its robustness. Therefore, box girder cranes are the best choice when the crane load exceeds 30t or the span exceeds 60 feet.
